MotionRec – Screen Recorder

Support

MotionRec Support

Get help with recording, permissions, editing, exporting, and MotionRec Pro.

1. Getting Started

How do I start a screen recording?

Open MotionRec and use the recording HUD. Choose what you want to capture, then press the red REC button to begin. MotionRec starts recording only when you initiate it.

How do I select a screen or window?

In the recording controls, choose a capture target such as a full Screen or an individual Window. Only visible (non-minimized) windows can be selected for window capture.

How do I stop a recording?

Use Stop in the recording HUD when you are finished. MotionRec saves the recording locally on your Mac so you can edit and export it.

2. macOS Permissions

Depending on what you capture, macOS may ask MotionRec for the following permissions:

  • Screen Recording — required to capture the display content (and related system audio capture capabilities) that you choose to record.
  • Accessibility — used for interaction-aware features such as detecting clicks and cursor activity used by automatic zoom and related recording behavior. This is not intended as monitoring of unrelated activity outside those features.
  • Microphone — optional; used only when you enable microphone recording.
  • Camera — optional; used only when you enable camera recording.

To manage permissions: open System Settings → Privacy & Security, select the relevant permission, and enable MotionRec.

After changing certain macOS permissions (especially Screen Recording or Accessibility), quit and reopen MotionRec so the new permission status is detected.

3. Recording & Audio

What can I record?

MotionRec can capture combinations of:

  • Screen — a display or window you select
  • System audio — sound your Mac plays while recording
  • Microphone — narration or voiceover when enabled
  • Camera — webcam overlay when enabled

How do I select recording sources?

Use the recording HUD to choose screen or window capture and to enable microphone and/or camera when needed. Combine sources based on what you are creating—for example, screen only for silent demos, or screen + microphone for narrated walkthroughs.

4. Editing

After recording, open your project in the MotionRec editor. Available editing tools include:

  • Automatic Zoom — zoom moments suggested around interactions
  • Zoom timeline — review and adjust zoom regions on the timeline
  • Backgrounds — images, colors, gradients, and video backgrounds
  • Padding, corner radius, and shadows — frame your recording
  • Crop — trim unwanted edges
  • Aspect ratios — prepare landscape, portrait, or social formats
  • Captions — generate captions locally from recorded speech
  • Audio controls — adjust recorded audio tracks

5. Exporting

When your edit is ready, use Export in MotionRec. Choose your export options, then save the finished video to a location on your Mac (Downloads is commonly suggested).

Free exports support up to 1080p. MotionRec Pro unlocks higher export resolutions, including 4K, along with additional premium export options available in the app.

6. MotionRec Pro

MotionRec Pro is purchased through Apple’s Mac App Store using In-App Purchase / StoreKit. Monthly and Annual plans are available. A 14-day free trial is currently offered where Apple shows introductory eligibility for your Apple Account.

Subscription pricing is shown by Apple in your local App Store storefront and currency. This support page does not list prices because they can vary by region.

If you already subscribed but Pro features are not unlocked, use Restore Purchases inside MotionRec (see below).

7. Restore Purchases

  1. Open MotionRec.
  2. Open the MotionRec Pro / paywall screen.
  3. Select Restore Purchases.
  4. Make sure your Mac is signed into the same Apple Account used for the original purchase.

If restore does not find an active subscription, confirm the purchase in your App Store account history, then try again while connected to the internet.

8. Troubleshooting

Screen Recording permission is not detected

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording, enable MotionRec, then quit and reopen MotionRec.

Accessibility permission is not detected

Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, enable MotionRec, then quit and reopen MotionRec.

Microphone or camera is unavailable

Confirm the source is enabled in MotionRec’s recording controls, then check System Settings → Privacy & Security for Microphone or Camera and enable MotionRec. Quit and reopen the app if the device still does not appear.

Recording cannot start

Verify Screen Recording (and Accessibility, when required for your workflow) are enabled for MotionRec. Choose a valid screen or visible window, then try REC again after restarting the app if permissions were just granted.

No system audio

Confirm system audio capture is enabled for the recording session and that Mac audio is playing during capture. Recheck Screen & System Audio Recording permission for MotionRec in System Settings, then quit and reopen MotionRec.

Export problems

Make sure you have enough free disk space and permission to save to the chosen folder. If a Pro-only export option is selected (such as 4K), confirm MotionRec Pro is active or use Restore Purchases. Try exporting again to Downloads if another destination fails.
